Community of Cultivators

Here at GCUC we are immensely fortunate to cross paths and work with so many amazing people. Through our work, we’ve cultivated a global community of people we think you should know about.

Community of Cultivators is a new blog series to introduce you to coworking game changers and connectors. Each month, we’ll release new interviews that we hope inform and inspire you.

This week we interviewed Amy King, the powerhouse behind GoodWork in DFW. You may have seen her lovely face at a GCUC or Women Who Cowork Event- she’s a regular. Check out what she had to say below.

Name: Amy King
Company and title: Founder of GoodWork

What in your life are you most proud of cultivating or creating? Why?

Transforming myself into a sober, self-actualized human six years ago will always be my biggest feat. I spent the first ten years of adulthood self-medicating to cope with an over-sensitive psyche and clinical depression and anxiety. Living sober and letting myself feel all the things is what has given me the focus to start my coworking business and work toward being the best me.

Where do you personally feel the most sense of community?

Having grown up in transient Washington, D.C., I didn’t know community, so I subconsciously sought to create it in my work as an adult. In every leadership position over the past 15 years, I’ve cultivated communities of shared purpose. My current coworking space is the physical manifestation of that community, but our connection is bigger than one workspace, it’s about changing the world and saving the humans and other vulnerable species.

What is one piece of advice you give everyone that works with and/or for you?

Something about boundaries that I learned from Her Highness Brene Brown. I’d rather a teammate say no to my reques, than volunteering when don’t have the capacity to do it. Trying to be the hero, then not delivering will ultimately bring disappointment to me and the team. It’s a mix of realism and the reminder to tame the people pleaser inside..

If you had $500 to spend- what would you buy?

A T-Rex costume to share with my team and underwriting to promote my business on our local NPR station.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of becoming an entrepreneur?

It’s the same advice that was given to me and has served me well. If you want something bad enough, don’t ever give up, even if you have to pivot. The moment you are about to throw in the towel is 100% of the time when a breakthrough is already on its way. It’s simply how the universe works.

What is the best habit you ever started? What habit do you want to start but haven’t yet?

I have a rebellious addict brain which likes to run from structure and routine. I must work extra hard to put routines in place that will give me the stability that I need to function well in my life and business. The habit that I’m working at daily is tackling the meatiest project first in the morning, when I’m at my best mentally. I’ve learned to protect my calendar so that I can get that thing done.

If you had to put a quote on your gravestone what would it be?

Carbon Neutral Since (insert death date).

Thats a wrap. More to come next week. See you then!
