In the heart of New Jersey, a revolution is taking place.

Equal Space, a community-driven coworking space, is providing a platform for members in tech to connect, collaborate, and thrive. At the center of this community initiative is Citi Medina, a passionate entrepreneur and founder of Equal Space.

In this podcast episode, Liz Elam sat down with him to discuss how his journey began while highlighting the vision, achievements and impact Equal Space has made in the tech industry.

14 years ago, Medina settled in Newark, New Jersey where he saw an opportunity to create a community that would foster collaboration, innovation, and support among equals in the industry.

What began as a large commercial space eventually turned into entrepreneurs, social justice advocates, tech gurus and many more all coming together and making Medina’s vision come true.

“That’s how Equal Space came to be,” Medina said. “It really stems from equal space and opportunity for all.”

Medina has been instrumental in shaping the community’s culture and direction, focusing on those with diverse backgrounds in need of a more inclusive environment. At Equal Space, the one-of-a-kind membership is true to form, with an entire team dedicated to meeting every member monthly for support and how they can help move them forward.

“Founders of color have a much harder trajectory of growth,” he said. “So we use our network to really help them move forward to keep pace with the rest of whatever industry they are in.”

Since its inception, Equal Space has made a significant impact on the industry in New Jersey. Medina recognized the importance of building relationships with local organizations, businesses, and government entities to create a sustainable and impactful community. By doing so, Equal Space sets itself apart from others and serves as a culturally celebratory sanctuary for anyone who walks in the door.

“From the floorboards up, seeing art that reflects you or having snacks that are local and reflect the diversity of life,” he said. “The more you hone into that, the more the space comes alive with the world we want to have.”

Medina’s story is a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives and the impact it can have on local environments. It is clear that by fostering a community that is both inclusive and innovative, Medina has created a space for those who might otherwise feel marginalized or overlooked in their industry.

Here at GCUC, we can’t help but wonder what other innovative initiatives Medina will bring to the table. Give this podcast a listen to hear what we are talking about.
