Volunteers needed in KC!

By Liz Elam On April 21, 2014 In Uncategorized

The 4th annual Global Coworking Unconference Conference (GCUC, pronounced “juicy”) is coming to Kansas City for its first traveling year. The conference is the largest global gathering of coworking space owners and operators and we are excited to welcome them to our booming entrepreneurial ecosystem!

How it happened

In the summer of 2013, the KC coworking and hacker space community rallied in partnership with the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, the Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City and the City of Kansas City, Missouri to respond to an RFP to bring GCUC to bring the conference here in 2014. Mayor Sly James wrote a letter to the organizers (which probably helped us tremendously!)

But I don’t want to leave out mentioned our greatest asset, the people of Kansas City. Our City is known as the “Silicon Prairie” because we have some the best and brightest talent in the country. And, our Midwestern hospitality continues to charm our first time visitors. In Kansas City, you will find a whole city, ready to welcome your attendees and make GCUC a huge success. – Mayor Sly James

Against a couple tier 1 cities and many tier 2 cities, Kansas City was selected as the 2014 location. The Kansas City coworking community leaders has created the local planning team to ensure the success of the even in our own backyard. Member of the planning committee include:

  • Kate DeWalt, OfficePort KC
  • Melissa Saubers, Cowork Waldo
  • Sarah Snyder, Think Big Coworking
  • Mary Ryan, KC Convention and Visitor’s Bureau
  • Rick Usher, Assistant City Manager
  • Andrew Wescott, OfficePort KC

Kansas City support

The Honorable Mayor Sly James will be making a warm Kansas City welcome address on the morning of the first day followed by keynote Scott Gerber of YEC and a series of speakers and panels that would get any coworking space owner or operator excited. Kansas City vendors providing services, the art community creating 3D letters, KC Food Trucks catering and local sponsoring companies Kauffman Foundation and Think Big Partners, prove how supportive this town really is. We couldn’t be prouder.
